The Joseph Binder Award by designaustria has always been about recognizing outstanding work in design and illustration. In 2027, we’re taking that idea further – creating more opportunities for the work, and the people behind it, to be seen, experienced and celebrated.
The Honored Selection goes beyond an award announcement. Before the final ranking is revealed, all Honored designers and illustrators take centre stage at the exhibition opening, giving their work a dedicated moment of recognition. Their work will also be featured in the renowned JBA catalogue and presented as part of a touring exhibition.
In each category, Joseph Binder Awards in gold, silver and bronze will be awarded in the form of trophies. In addition, the jury may give away up to three distinctions in each of the graphic design and illustration categories.
In order to support independent, conceptual, scientific, and non-commercial activities in the fields of graphic design and illustration, cash prizes in a total of 6.000 Euros will be awarded up to five outstanding projects in the Design Fiction category.
The Henry Steiner Prize will be awarded to honor a particularly deserving project fostering dialogue between diverse cultural perspectives.
And there’s more. The Joseph Binder Days bring the design and illustration community together over two days, 28–29 April, 2027, at MuseumsQuartier Vienna – expanded into a program of exhibition, exchange and celebration.
The exhibition opening starts things off, followed the next day by the symposium, with free admission for every Honored Designer and Honored Illustrator. The Joseph Binder Award Show then reveals the final ranking, before the After Show Get-Together at designforum Wien rounds off the day with food, drinks and music.
