The Right to Be Useless – Workshop mit Warrink Gosia
Am 8. und 9. Juni (jeweils 9 bis 16:45 Uhr) findet im designforum Wien ein Workshop zum Thema Speculative Design statt. Im Rahmen von „The Right to Be Useless“ zeigt Warrink Gosia, wie spekulative Designmethoden genutzt werden können, um dominante Vorstellungen von Nützlichkeit und Produktivität zu hinterfragen – und Zukünfte zu entwerfen, in denen wirtschaftliches Wachstum nicht länger im Mittelpunkt steht.

The Right to Be Useless
What if being useless was a fundamental human right?
Imagine a society in which productivity is no longer a central value. Design artifacts, rituals, or systems that support meaningful forms of “uselessness”.
In this speculative design workshop, we explore thought experiments and alternative future scenarios—ranging from utopian to dystopian—in which economic growth is no longer a central value. Through a series of hands-on exercises, dominant ideas of usefulness are questioned by rethinking, subverting, or even “sabotaging” existing assumptions about value, purpose, and progress. By materializing early ideas through sketches, narrative concepts, and simple prototypes, abstract futures become tangible and open to discussion.
The workshop introduces speculative thinking and supports the development of first design directions, combining critical reflection with playful and rebellious design approaches.
